Your energy impacts your quality of life. It affects your health, mental wellbeing, performance, and relationships. The good news is that there is a lot that you can do to optimize your energy and your quality of life.
“Energy and persistence conquer all things.” – Benjamin Franklin
Are you an old clunker or a finely tuned race car?
The human body is an amazing machine! Energetically, we humans are like cars; some resemble old clunkers while others finely tuned race cars! Humans and race cars both convert fuel into energy to perform work. You convert the fuel from food into energy (ATP) for physical and mental work. In the case of a car, the fuel is gasoline or electricity, and the energy is used to power the engine and drive the car. Both humans and cars have variable abilities to create energy, limit energy losses and use energy for work. As a human, you must take in fuel daily to generate the energy for life and work. As with cars, some humans are highly efficient at creating and using energy. Would you like to become one of those? The human version of a finely tuned racecar?
If the answer to this question is yes, you are in luck! This blog is the first in a series on how to optimize human energy.
What is human energy?
Human energy refers to a person’s physical and mental vitality, which enables them to engage in life activities or work. It encompasses several components, including physical energy (such as the energy needed to perform physical tasks), emotional energy (such as the energy required to experience and process emotions), and mental energy (such as the energy needed to think, concentrate, and remember).
“Energy is not just something we have, but something we make.” – Angela Duckworth
How does the body make energy?
Individual cells make energy, in the mitochondria (little factories in every cell), through the process of cellular respiration, which involves the breakdown of glucose into cellular energy (ATP).
Why do your energy levels matter?
Your energy levels impact all aspects of your life, including:
- Performance and productivity: Adequate energy levels are necessary for physical and mental activities, allowing us to perform at our best and meet the demands of our daily lives.
- Mental and emotional wellbeing: Energy levels can affect mood, motivation, and emotional wellbeing, with low energy levels often leading to feelings of fatigue, stress, and depression.
- Physical health: Energy is required to sustain life and maintain physical health, with adequate energy intake and physical activity essential for maintaining a healthy weight, reducing the risk of chronic disease, and promoting longevity.
- Pursuing personal goals and dreams: Energy fuels our passions and drives us to pursue our goals and aspirations, providing the motivation and focus we need to succeed.
- Quality of life: Energy is a critical component of our overall wellbeing and can significantly impact our quality of life, happiness, and sense of fulfillment.
Therefore, it is crucial to prioritize and manage our energy levels to ensure we have the resources necessary to lead healthy, productive, and fulfilling lives.
