“Your energy impacts the quality of your experiences and the quality of your life”- Leonaura Rhodes
Your body is an energy-creating machine. But just like a mechanical machine, any inefficiencies lead to resistance and energy loss, reducing the amount of energy available for work and life. Your energy influences your physical health, mental health, creativity, productivity, and your relationships. Life is more fun and fulfilling when you have good energy,
What is energy coherence?
Energy coherence in the body refers to the harmonious and synchronized flow of energy throughout the various systems and organs in the body. When the body systems are coherent less energy is sapped, and more energy is available to be used: in other words, the body is functioning optimally and efficiently.
What is energy incoherence?
Energy incoherence refers to a state where the various systems and organs are not functioning in a harmonious or synchronized way. The energy that is being created by the body is sapped before it can be used, and the flow of energy in the body is disrupted.
What can sap your energy?
- Illness or health problems: Chronic illness, pain, or other health problems can sap your energy and leave you feeling fatigued. If you have an infection or inflammation, your body’s immune system is ramped up, using a lot of energy and resources. In addition, when you are sick, you may not sleep or eat well, leading to further incoherence.
- Lack of sleep: During sleep, the body repairs and rejuvenates itself. Without sufficient sleep, the body doesn’t have the opportunity to recover, resulting in a decrease in physical energy. Lack of sleep also increases inflammation which further saps energy. It also reduces cognitive function, memory, attention, and emotional well-being.
- Poor diet: Lack of essential nutrients like vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and antioxidants impacts the function of all cells, systems, and organs in the body. Inflammation may be triggered by highly processed foods and foods you are allergic to or sensitive to. Lack of nutrients and inflammation leads to incoherence, disruption of the gut microbiome, gut inflammation, blood sugar imbalances, and cellular damage.
- Dehydration: When dehydrated, our blood volume decreases, reducing nutrient and oxygen supply throughout the body. It also activates the stress response and impairs cognitive function, decreasing mental clarity and focus.
- Stress: Increases cortisol levels triggering the fight and flight response, increases muscle tension and fatigue, and leads to mental exhaustion, putting extra strain on the body and nervous system.
- Negative emotions: Any negative emotions like anxiety, depression, and anger disrupt the body’s energy flow and lead to incoherence.
- Negative thinking: Depletes energy by activating the stress response and decreasing heart rate variability (a sign of incoherence).
- Sedentary lifestyle: Saps energy by contributing to decreased muscle mass and strength, sluggish circulation, reduced metabolism, increased stress, and poor mood and motivation.
- Overworking: Working long hours without taking breaks can drain your energy and leave you feeling burned out due to prolonged periods of physical activity or intense mental concentration, increased stress, lack of time for rest and recovery, or physical inactivity (for those with desk jobs).
- Multitasking: Our brains are not designed to perform multiple tasks simultaneously. This results in constantly switching our attention back and forth between them, which can be mentally taxing and inefficient.
- Socializing: While socializing can be fun and energizing for some people, it can also be draining for others, especially introverts. Socializing can sap energy due to the mental, emotional, physical, and time demands it places on us. In addition, some people drain our energy more than others, as described in this great quote from Judith Orloff “Energy vampires don’t just suck your physical energy; they can also drain you emotionally and spiritually.”
Your body works hard to create life energy, but many things can sap your energy. The good news is that if you can identify your “energy sappers,” you can reduce their impact and feel more energized and productive throughout the day.
