So tell me, what do you truly desire?
This question “so tell me, what do you truly desire?” comes not from any great work of literature but from the very silly TV show Lucifer. In the show Lucifer (yes the devil is living in LA today – I said it was silly) has a magical power… when he asks this question people are compelled to tell him the truth.
One of the problems with the question “what do you truly desire?” is that many people don’t know. They get stuck in their head, intellectualising the question. So I came up with my own version of this question, which has 5 steps. I designed the sequence when I was writing my book, because I wanted to write a book for my audience and not for me. I also ask these questions when I start coaching someone new and at the beginning of many of my talks and webinars.
The Magic Wand exercise
If I gave you a magic wand and it could change anything in your life what would you:
Want less of?
Want to feel less of?
Want more of?
Want to feel more of?
If you had to choose 3 things from the above what would you pick?
I recommend you do this exercise before you read on. It’s rare someone gives you a magic wand, even if it’s an imaginary one!

When I first started asking this, the answers surprised me. Rarely did people mention that they wanted more stuff.
Common “less of” answers include: Stress, negativity, tiredness, feeling overwhelmed with responsibility, worry and anxiety, financial worries, health concerns and relationship difficulties.
Common “more of” answers include: Happiness, health, energy, passion, purpose, love, contentment, peace, relaxation, connection, inspiration, motivation, adventure, fun, quality time, financial freedom, autonomy and success.
As a coach this insight into what people truly desire is so useful because it guides our journey. For you it can be a really useful starting point for creating the life you dream of and desire. Just a word of warning: you may not be able to create the life you dream of and desire alone – if it were easy everyone would be living their perfect life. Having a coach, mentor or guide can help shorten and ease the journey!
